How does the Special's schedule work?

Storm School special's schedule operates on a 5-day rotation, not a traditional Monday through Friday schedule.  Each day of the rotation is counted as a day of the rotation.  Each day students are not in attendance or are only in attendance for a half of a day, it is counted as a DAY ZERO.

How often do we have Spanish class and how long is it?

Spanish is taught twice a week to full-day Kindergarten through Fifth Grade classes.  Students have thirty minutes of Spanish each class period.  1/2 Day Kindergarten students only have one thirty minute Spanish class each week.

for all types of elementary school foreign language programs.

What is the curriculum for the K-5 FLES program at Storm?

K-5 FLES CURRICULUM

Grades K-1: Students in kindergarten continue to learn their numbers and 
colors. The first graders also reviewed greetings, colors, numbers, and the 
calendar. They are now learning to identify parts of the body. Our next 
unit of study will be about family.
 
Grade 2-3: Students began the school year by reviewing previously learned 
vocabulary. Second grade students have been focusing on calendar-related 
words. The children are learning to identify and write the date, days of 
the week, months, and their birthday in Spanish. Third graders will soon 
learn to describe feelings and emotions.
 
Grades 4-5: The students reviewed previously learned vocabulary by 
participating in various games and activities. Fifth graders also learned 
how to express the time in Spanish. We are now exploring the customs and 
traditions of the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico.

How do young children learn a foreign language?

Children acquire a second language in much the same way as they

acquire their first language. For example: comprehension precedes 
speech, speech emerges in stages, communication is the goal, and the 
learning atmosphere is relaxed and non-stressful. Batavia's FLES 
program is based upon Total Physical Response (TPR) and the Natural 
Approach.
